Sound goes down on the Fringe’s biggest day out.
Fringe Sunday was thrown into chaos yesterday as two power
generators failed in separate incidents during the event.
Around 4pm, with one hour to go before the event was due to
end, power went down in the comedy tent during a live performance.
The comedian Tanyalee Davis was performing stage when the
incident happened. Tanyalee who refers to herself as a “little person” and does
her set on a chair, was forced to leave the stage abruptly as the lighting and
sound went down around her.
There was an estimated crowd of 800 inside the tent and the
audience were left in the dark as technicians frantically worked to fix the
problem.
There was a second failure in the cabaret tent minutes later
as again the lights and sound went down. Australian geek-folk band, Tripod was
unable to continue their set and was forced to wait until the problem was
solved.
Compere for the day, comedian Sabrina George said: “I have
no idea what the reasons were for the power cuts. It was all a bit of a mess.
My last hour was more traffic control than comedy but the event was a success
overall.”
Fringe Sunday was plagued by other problems after comedian
Alisdair Barrie refused to leave the stage as his set ran over the strict running
schedule that the event adheres to. When asked to leave the stage by compere
Sabrina George, Barrie
swore at her and continued his set.
Fringe Sunday was celebrated by around 200, 000 people, who
enjoyed the mostly dry weather. The event ran from 11am to 5pm. The event has
run for 26 years and is a showcase acts for the final two weeks of the Fringe
Festival.
The event faces a troubled future as organisers struggle to
find a new sponsor after Bank of Scotland refused to pledge future support.
